Banish That Canker Sore!
Few things are more annoying than a canker sore. They may be tiny, but when one shows up, every word you say and every bite you take can feel downright painful. So what exactly are these little troublemakers, and how can you ease the discomfort fast? Let’s break it down and share a simple “canker-sore-be-gone” grocery list that might help.
What is a Canker Sore?
A canker sore is actually a type of ulcer—its medical name is aphthous ulcer—and it comes in two forms: minor and major.
Minor cankers are the most common, especially between ages 10 and 20. They are small, shallow, and usually heal within 7 to 10 days.
Major cankers last longer, sometimes two to six weeks. They are deeper, may have irregular edges, and often appear in the same spot where a minor canker once was. These tend to show up more often in adults.
Only about 20 percent of the U.S. population regularly experiences canker sores, but if you are one of the unlucky few, you know just how painful they can be.
Who Gets Them and Why?
Both men and women can develop canker sores, though women tend to experience them more often, possibly due to hormonal changes. Genetics also play a role—if cankers run in your family, you might be more likely to get them.
Common triggers include:
Spicy or salty foods
Abrasive or acidic foods (like citrus or tomatoes)
Stress or injury inside the mouth

While canker sores usually go away on their own, these remedies can help ease pain and speed up healing:
Rinses (use four times a day)
Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water.
Try a salt and baking soda rinse (½ teaspoon of each in 4 oz. of water).
Numbing agents
Over-the-counter options like Orajel® or Kank-A® can numb pain temporarily.
Protective pastes
Dab milk of magnesia on the sore with a cotton swab after rinsing.
Make a paste from baking soda and water to soothe the area.
Antimicrobial mouthwash
Using one regularly may reduce bacteria and promote healing.
When to See a Doctor
Most canker sores heal within a week or two. But if a sore lasts longer than two weeks, is unusually large, or is extremely painful, it is best to schedule an appointment with your dentist or doctor. Prescription medications may be needed to bring relief.
